Dr. Kara L. Gordon

Director, Neurobiology, Vala Sciences, Inc.

Dr. Kara L. Gordon is the Director of Neurobiology at Vala Sciences, a biotech located in San Diego, CA. Vala uses its flagship kinetic image cytometer (IC-20O-KIC®) with high throughput automation and analytics with iPSC-derived cells to measure single-cell responses to drugs and in disease conditions. Dr. Gordon is leading efforts to create iPSC-derived neuron and neuron-astrocyte-microglia co-cultures. These culture systems can be used to model neurological disorders for drug discovery and for neurotoxicity screening. She received her Ph.D. in Neuroscience at the University of Iowa and completed post-doctoral training at the University of California San Diego before joining the team at Vala Sciences 4 years ago.

Michal Millrod

Scientist II, Elixirgen Scientific, Inc.

Dr. Michal Millrod joined Elixirgen Scientific in the beginning of 2020. She has a Ph.D. in Immunology from the Department of Molecular Biology and Genomics at the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine. Dr. Millrod’s graduate research was conducted in the Johns Hopkins Institute for Cell Engineering and she completed a postdoctoral fellowship in vascular biology at the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine. Dr. Millrod has over a decade of experience culturing and differentiating human pluripotent stem cells. She has particular expertise in differentiation towards mesodermal lineages such as hematopoietic, cardiac, and endothelial cells. At Elixirgen Scientific Dr. Millrod specializes in creating consistent, intuitive, and easy-to-follow User Guides to ultimately save clients’ time and increase their efficiency so they can focus on achieving their research goals.
